The OG Infotainment System

"The skin running atop the Android system was created by the design-focused folks in Woking, with a minimalist, black and silver UI that matches the purposeful aesthetic of the interior."

McLaren MP4-12c Infotainment Interface

This project included a highly skilled team of engineers and designers working together to create something amazing. There were hardware and software teams around the globe working around the clock.

Designing an infotainment system for such a beautiful machine is an amazing opportunity - and a lot of pressure. We didn't have a lot of time to get something up and running with a tight schedule of just 6 months from concept to launch and you want to do your best work on a car that retails for over $300k USD.

Executives at Apple said it was the best implementation of iTunes UX integration they had seen to date so we must have done something right.

Research & Discovery

We jumped right into the wireframing process due to a super short deadline, we were fast (like the car). It was an intense process that occurred over a period of a few weeks, in collaboration with the managing director of McLaren Auto.

Definition

We created quick process flows for areas of the experience that had complex interactions or multithreaded activities. This process flow is for when multiple calls come in simultaneously.

The MicroControl Centre (MCC)

The MicroControl Centre was a concept we developed as part of the custom interface for the infotainment system. It was a core component that played a specific and important role in the interaction and experience and was unique to McLaren. The wireframes show how the control centre behaves in different situations - an incoming call, navigation and media playback.
